: : In fact, since he specified that his motherboard has an SiS chipset, I'll
: : underscore that: my SiS chipset has an incompetant external cache, which
: : must be disabled for busmastered DMA to work. Disable the external cache
: : and try again. (And if it then works, see if you can trade in your
: : motherboard for something not designed by cementheads.)

: I will note that I have a P90 motherboard with an SiS chipset that
: works just fine with NetBSD1.0 and an NCR53C810 SCSI. So, although
: I wouldn't be a bit surprised that old 486 Sis motherboard chipsets
: have problems, their current Pentium one seems fine (at least for only
: one bus mastering dma device:-).

And as another datapoint, I have two 486 boxes with SiS chipsets here. Both
running NetBSD. Both have been used with an Adaptec 1540A, and one of them
now has an Adaptec 1542CF. No cache problems.
