But with FreeBSD 2.0.5, is this built in? Does it work with all laptops
with PCMCIA? Is there a PCMCIA ethernet card that is particularly good (or
bad) to use with FreeBSD? And is it stable... or still very beta?

The answer is that there's _limited_ support for PCMCIA in FreeBSD
2.0.5, with 2 ethernet cards supported by ze and zp drivers. I use a
National Semiconductor "Infomover" card myself and it works a charm in
my Toshiba T1910 laptop. I've also used it in 3 other laptops of
varying manufacture and they also work just fine.

Work is currently ongoing to deal with the modem cards next and
there's some stuff currently in BETA test. Ask in hackers@freebsd.org
and the author will undoubtedly be happy to send you the patches.
