You can modify the boot blocks for the FreeBSD partition. The source for them 
is in /sys/i386/boot/biosboot/boot.c (or the like). There You can set the 
default for the boot prompt to wd, drive 1. As I am writing from memory I 
can't tell you the source line and the values to change, but I did it sometime 
ago for the same reason.
After building the boot blocks install them with disklabel.
