You're trying to run ppp on a system that isn't configured for ppp.
You need to build a new kernel with the ``pseudo-device ppp 2'' line
in it.  (Refer to the FAQ on how to build a new kernel.)

ppp in 2.0R is known to be broken.  There used to be a patch floating
around that fixed the most annoying problem (missing initialization of
a variable, causing immediate reboots).  Look up this newsgroup (under
the keyword `ppp'), i'm sure you'll be able to locate the patch
somewhere.
