Daring to challenge the will of the almighty Leviam00se, Kyle Rollin
(102331.2147@CompuServe.COM) had the courage to say:

: Is there a FTP site that ZIPs up FreeBSD? My FTP site I'm going
: to does not zip it, and it's a pain to download 30-some odd 235K
: files. Can anybody point me to a site where they ZIP it?
: Many thanks!
:

The files *are* zipped. All of the bin.aa through bin.whatever files
are actually 240K chunks of one giant gzipped tar archive. Ditto for
the other pieces. Everything is already compressed for you: compressing
it again won't do anything except waste time.

If you really don't want to download the distribution over the net,
you could always wait until Walnut Creek presses the CD-ROM and
buy it from them. (Shameless plug.)
