There's a nice section in the FAQ, at least from my remembrance when
proofreading it on the WWW server.

However, you shouldn't even bother with the old `cu' (which basically
is the awful `tip').  It's only an accident that FreeBSD 2.0R has been
shipping with that `cu' instead of the version from Taylor uucp.  You
can recompile the Taylor version, which is far less trouble to setup.
(Taylor uucp source is in /usr/src/gnu/libexec/uucp).
