This is a good idea.  Of course, don't forget that this same problem
exists for Windows, Windows NT, OS/2, and the Mac.  A little different
on the Mac (too many configs in a single place!) but the others all
have applications that make free run over ini files and install their
configuration information all over the place.

My Linux system has config files everywhere.  About all I've been able
to do is try (largely in vain) to keep all configuration data in
the /usr/local partition.  Beyond that, I just don't have the time.
