The solution to this is straightforward: kill all traces of your smail
installation, and install sendmail 8.6.whatever-it-is-now instead.  I
wouldn't presume to try to influence you by offering up several years'
worth of pent-up hatred of smail on my part but, really, smail is quite
horrible.

Mind you, I would not hesitate to say the same of sendmail, but at
least it loses in ways that are usually both less obtrusive and better
documented.
