Summary: cant get FreeBSD connect to Inet via PPP
Keywords: ppp client freebsd

I have been in many ways impressed with the solid perfomance of FreeBSD, the ease of the
installation of some of the ports. (pine/pico, Xfree, hostview ect.) Which is why its a pity
that I am going to have to chuck the whole thing in because of my inability to get FreeBSD
hooked up to my internet provider. (who offers only PPP).

I have recompiled my kernal adding the pseudo-device ppp line, I have added the 1 line patch
to if_ppp.c, I have run /stand/bininst filling in the appropriate details, and I have created
/etc/ppp/options as per the ppp.faq. (I removed the noipdefault line, as my provider assigns
me the same addr every time, and entered my ip addr before my hosts ip addr.)

I dial and connect to my provider using tip cua01, start ppp on the remote end, and exit tip
(without haging the modem up). Now I type /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/cua01 38400. A message is
returned saying (my_ip) unknown host, pppd exits - and thats it ! So I have tryed turning on
the noipdefault switch in the /etc/ppp/options file, and removing my ip address (leaving only
the address of my remote host.) Now when I try I get the messaged (hosts_ip_addr) unknown
host !

I know a lot of other people are having problems with this and i am surprised there is not a
more comprehensive FAQ (Not one that presumes you know to apply patches that are not
mentioned [to my knowledge] in ANY documentation, or ANY faq ANYWHERE)

Anyway thanks to Sean Kelly for answering my last plea and getting me this far.
