I've been reading the 3com 3c509B comments of late as I was having the same
problem. I tried the "link2" suggestion, but still have a problem. Has anyone
seen the following: (I've added the link2 argument to ifconfig, and the
card is configured at 0x300 IRQ 10.)

- when the card has plug-and-play enabled, at boot time I get a message like
  this:
"ep0 at 0x300 in test mode - erase pencil mark
   eeprom failed to come ready"
and the card does not work.

- when the card has plug-and-play disabled, the card is recognized nicely
at boot time (0x300 IRQ 10), and everyone seems happy until I get to the
point in the boot sequence when this message arrives:
    "changing root device to sd0a"
At this point the machine hangs and needs to be rebooted.

Can anyone lead me down the path of success? Thanks - I'll read eagerly
awaiting your wisdom...

I was thinking IRQ conflict, but can't seem to find one (naive question: is
there an easy way to find the base addresses and IRQs for all devices in the
system? Some come up at boot but scroll right off the screen).

P.S. - for reference, my setup includes an intel premiere motherboard,
adaptec 2940W SCSI with 4 drives, SB16, 3c509B ethernet (of course), and
Mach 64, 4-meg video...
