Did you specify the link2 flag for ifconfig?  This is needed for the UTP
connection.  In /etc/hostname.ep0, you should have

xxx.xxx.ip.addr  hostname  0xffffff00 link2

where xxx.xxx.ip.addr  is th IP address for your machine, hostname is
your machine's name, then the netmask, and finally link2
