FreeBSD 1.1.5.1 or newest FreeBSD 2.0 SNAPSHOT (of 2.0-current).
Why ? Read the Netnews ... ?

BTW: perhaps 1000 people will cry *BSD, possibly 10000 people Linux.
     Better you try both.

For Linux I recommend Slackware or LST.

For *BSD I recommend 2.0-current (SNAP of Feb. 12th).

Networking is a bit better on *BSD.... Simply said 
FreeBSD is a Unix ... it contains real BSD code :)
