Well, under FreeBSD you have the choice:

1) Compile the "port" and be able to adapt it to 
   your needs, without having to know anything 
   except to type "make all install clean" for
   the general case.

2) Use "pkg_install" to install a binary "package",
   e.g. for GNU-Emacs, if you don't want to build
   from sources.

For me "ports" is the much simpler method, because
I have my "/usr/ports" automatically updated.

If I ever want to install a new version, I just 
say "make", and the sources will be got via FTP
and the compilation done.

Seems we agree on this ...

Just that I spend even less time with FreeBSD.
I can SUP the ports hierarchy (could as well 
get updates via a mail list) and the actual 
transfer of the sources is done from within 
the source file ...

Has surprised quite a number of Linux adicts 
recently ... :)
