I disagree on both counts. DEC still sells systems with embedded Adaptec 17xx
controllers (I've got a spanking new Alpha PC that proves it), and Adaptec is
under contract to DEC to provide them for at least another year or several.
If you can't find them locally, call 1-800-DIGITAL and ask them. I think they
want about $400 for them.

On the other hand, the cards are absolute junk and I wouldn't have one as a
gift. The probability that a new 17xx will not work in a new EISA motherboard
are better than even in my experience. Use a Buslogic 747, it's way better.

I've got a 17xx in a box here but you can't have it -- I'm saving it for when
the weather improves, I'm gonna shoot it (just like the last couple o' boards.)
