You need to build a new kernel - this isn't as bas as it sounds - just
takes a bit of time.....

In the kernel config file there are a few lines at the bottom called
psuedo-devices. You need to add a line:

psuedo-device ppp	X

where X is the number of ppp devices you want to add...

On my home system, I only added 2 ppp devices - 1 for use by the modem &
a second for my other home system to experiment with...

I Just added the line - psuedo-devive ppp 2
recompiled the kernel and started experimenting.
