The answer to my problem has been suggested by Richard Kuhns.

There is a bug in FreeBSD 2.0-RELEASE that make a process dump a core
when it tries to exec() after a failed exec().  Remove the superfluous
exec()s in /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/tar/rtapelib.c and you made the trick.

Someone in this thread wrote about problems with tar and files in
/proc directory. Read my article "GNU tar on FreeBSD 2.0" for a quick
and dirty fix.
