I have tried to install the X386 binaries (X386 version 1.2E 1.0.1) from agate.berkeley.edu. When I run startx I get an error message to the effect that the server can't open /dev/vga. This is presumably the device that the server uses to access the video hardware, but I can't find any info on what the device numbers need to be. Being foolhardy, I reckoned this had to be some form of access to the console, so I tried mknod /dev/vga c 0 0. The result was an instantaneous crash of the whole system. I have not been able to find any reference to /dev/vga in any of the information I have collected. Can someone please enlighten me - before I do some serious damage to my system? Thanks Paul Nulsen
