The bulk of installed line amps are semi-bidirectional, with a small
back-channel. Our (antiquated) local cable plant uses this for pay-per-view,
which is controlled from the remote control. Back channels also pass decoder
box serial numbers, I think, for various purposes that they don't like to talk
about. Theer's a _little_ data bandwidth.

Actually, I had to have them move the White Mountain Fiber Optic Co. truck
from my driveway yesterday, in order to drive to work. I think Continental
Cable was (finally) stringing new plant! (Hey, if it keeps the heat on NYNEX,
it's fun to watch.)
