I have the same controller (DC4030VL-1) and it works fine.  In fact, I was
able to get FreeBSD to work with drives with more than 1024 cylinders as I
have to 1G drives.  The only reason I could think of why FreeBSD can't see
your controller is if you have it setup as a secondary controller.
