need more help with tcp/ip setup

We are trying to remotely setup FreeBSD in this machine.
We want to get freebsd via ftp.
But our NE2000 weirds up on us.

We had no problems installing freebsd with a 3c509 card,
but we wouldrather use the NE2000.

'ifconfig ed1 ip.address netmask'

Am I missing something?
The NE2000 cart has a UTP connector ONLY.
