Integrated Services Digital Network.

This is a new(ish) digital presentation for telephone systems. It
comes at various speeds and various numbers of channels depending
on how you subscribe. The fastest presentation I know of is
1.55Mbps or 2.048Mbps depending on country and carries 24 or 32
channels if I remember correctly. This is essentialy for business
use. The 'standard' individual subscriber rate is somewhere
around 2 channels at 64kbps (B channels) plus a control channel at
arouns 16kbps (D channel) (details may vary between countries,
possibly the second 64 channel will be at a premium). This all
comes down a standard telephone wire! ISDN multiple types of
service on single lines, frequently concurrently, and because it
identifies service type it allows thing like selective transfer by
service, e.g., it can transfer your voice phone calls to your
office, faxes to your companies fax machine and your modem.

It's getting established (slowly in most places) Germany has been
aggressivly pricing and has 'many' subscriber lines installed. UK
is more expensive so takup is slower. I don't know about
elsewhere.

BTW, here it's also known as "Innovations Subscribers Don't Need" :-)

Regards,
