There's something about this in the FAQ... if you're running 1.1.x, then you 
may be stuck.  If you're running 2.0.x, this should be avoidable - perhaps one 
of your serial lines is acting improperly (I seem to remember something 
mentioned about waiting for CD to go active before returning, but this was 
some time ago that I read it...).
