I had the same problem .. here's the answer:

Check out

        ftp://charon.amdahl.com/pub/agc/top-3.3-netbsd.tar.gz

which is a version of top 3.3 for NetBSD with Thorsten Lockert's patches.
Works on 1.0 and -current.
