:I had the same problem and this is how I fixed it. First I added this line to
:/etc/remote

: com2:dv=/dev/tty01:br#38400:

: This will let you use 'tip com2' to access your modem. ( If your modem is
: connected to com1 change /dev/tty01 to /dev/tty00. )

: Then change the tty01 line in /etc/ttys to:

: tty01 "/usr/libexec/getty std.57600" dailup off rtscts local

: The tell you modem to ignore DTR. On my modem, a ZyXel, it was AT&D0.

: Now typing 'tip com2' should let you talk to your modem. Some of these steps

I had a similar entry in /etc/remote and I still couldn't use tip or cu,
that is until I added local and rtscts to the end of the tty00 entry in
/etc/ttys and typed 'ttyflags -a'. No problems after that. Thanks.

Btw, kermit DID work before I made any changes to the /etc/ttys file, much
to my surprise.

For the record, the whole process of installing the system, XFree86, and
configuring everything was pretty painless and I offer many thanks to the
people who helped make it that way. My own lack of knowledge was my only
stumbling block.
