I am experiencing the same problem with the generic kernel. Actually, I
am able to get something over the line because one of my Hayes Modem leds
flashes befor tip complains that the link is down and cu gives a write
error.

: Have you tried kermit

My next step, though I have my doubts.

I have tried several different controllers with dos and NetBSD-1.0. I
don't have any trouble in dos.

: com0 at isa0 port 0x3f8-0x3ff irq 4: ns82450 or ns16450, no fifo
: com1 at isa0 port 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 3: ns82450 or ns16450, no fifo
: Does dmesg list the above ? if not recompile kernel with support for com?

I do get this message.

: Are you running ttyflags -a
: Have you set the flags in ttys (man ttys) you might try (this is guessing):
: tty00	"/usr/libexec/getty std.9600"	dailup on rtscts
: (if you have rts/cts handshaking which you should)

I can call up the modem if I have the ttys entry and it will respond, but
I would like to dial out.

: try setting flags for tty00 with 'stty'

I have tried the faq recommended 'stty -f /dev/tty00 clocal' with no effect.

Any help is appreciated.
