Hmm, I got the distribution from Berkeley.Edu, and not from FreeBSD.Org.
I'll try the distribution from FreeBSD.Org.

When an SMTP connection is made to my FreeBSD sendmail with ident on, there
is a long (20 second?) wait while sendmail tries to talk ident.  In most
cases, the sending host is not using ident.
