	i installed the patches from Mr. Greenman (except #4) and saw this
	performance speed-up when running 'make depend' for the kernel
	rebuild (virgin compile/xxx directory):

	without patch:	60.9u 58.1s 4:45.87 41.6% 0+0k 0+0io 0pf+0w     (make depend)
	with    patch:	61.7u 53.8s 2:17.82 83.8% 0+0k 0+0io 0pf+0w
				    ^^^^^^^ ^^^^^

	for both trys, the machine was otherwise idle.
	this is more than a 2x improvement in wall-clock time.
