I can't claim to have the same problem, but my Python DAT drive 
works fine with tar (restored /home from 1.1.5.1 and installed 2.0 from
tape) but the "mt" command returns a similar error.

I miss the "st" command...
(if anyone has the source to this, gzip/tar it to the incoming on 
cdrom.com)
