The plot thickens ..

I tried again today and yes it does write and then reread the archive, even
after leaving out the write density parameter, but, whenever mt touches the
tape drive what ever was on the tape magically disappears.

If i write a QIC-525 tape then reboot, the tape will yield its contents. Though
if i change tape types either to 150 or 250, the original 525 fails to respond
to tar tv and mt -f /dev/(pick a raw tape device) just drops error messages and
a some confused characters on the screen .. then the tape drive goes out to
lunch, untill the next reboot.

stranger and stranger ..

has anyone else had any experience this setting up "esoteric" tape drives ?
