I would have bet that something like: /usr/sbin/kbdcontrol -l /usr/share/syscons/keymaps/french.cp850.kbd should do the trick. But there is NO french keyboard layout file :-( As there are indeed FBSD users in France (Olivier do you read this?) the problem should already have a solution.
