For those struggling with it, the one line fix posted earlier 
``seems'' to stop the crashes.

But Jordan's suggestion to use if_ppp.c from -current produces:

loading kernel
if_ppp.o: Undefined symbol `_clist_alloc_cblocks' referenced from text segment
if_ppp.o: Undefined symbol `_clist_alloc_cblocks' referenced from text segment
if_ppp.o: Undefined symbol `_clist_alloc_cblocks' referenced from text segment

if_ppp.o: Undefined symbol `_clist_alloc_cblocks' referenced from text segment
*** Error code 1

(And just for the curious, what is if_sppp.c?)
