I was wrong about nolinear not working simply because I mistakenly assumed
it was a command line option rather than an XF86Config Option. A closer
reading of the XF86_S3 man page brought that to my attention. With the
following entires in Section "Device", the S3 server now works on my IBM
PS/Value Point 486 under FreeBSD 2.0-RELEASE:

Ramdac "ATT20C490"
Option "dac_8_bit"
Option "nolinear"

Thanks to all who responded here or via e-mail.
