Sorry if this has been covered previously or isnt quite the problem this
thread has been covering (seems that I have missed the beginning).

I am running 2.0 on my system.  My modem is 2400 (external).  The
configuration run fine under MSDOS.  With tip I could talk to the modem. 
I configured the ttys file approperately for dialup.  When someone
connects with the modem, the system never spits out the login prompt (or
anything else).  Could someone *please* help me?

In attempting to get dialin to work over the various releases (since
386BSD-0.1), I found that using a serial card with a 16550 UART solves all
sorts of problems (unfortunately not the ones that I can fix).  Just my
$.02
