I would like to learn BSD and UNIX and I thought the best way to start is
to download one of those free OS on my PC and play, any help on how and where
to get such software will be very appreciated. I know there are ftp sites
to download, but do you download everything, binaries only, what? Where can
you get cheap or free BSD OS on floppies or CDs? Thanks for your help.

You can get a test installation of the soon-to-be-released NetBSD-1.0
from ftp.iastate.edu in /pub/netbsd/NetBSD-current/binaries/i386/....
Read the INSTALL doc in that dir for help on what you should retrieve.

You'll have to dig a little to find a site that has FreeBSD binaries
(try using archie, or something similar), since it doesn't currently
live at its source site. You can retrieve documentation about FreeBSD
from freebsd.cdrom.com, however.
