Many people can't get it to compile because they're trying to use
"popper" which is apparently unsupported code that hasn't been updated in
over a year. You have more choices than that:

ftp.cac.washington.edu:/mail/pine.tar.Z

This has both the pine mail client and the IMAP c-client distribution. In
with the IMAP material are pop2 and pop3 server extensions. If you can get
the c-client to compile, then you're home free on the POP stuff. If you
have trouble, I suggest that you consider posting to comp.os.386bsd.questions
instead of comp.unix.bsd since you'll find a more suitable audience there.
In reality comp.unix.bsd has been aliased to alt.fan.jesus.monroy.jr
(explains a lot, doesn't it? ;)

ftp.qualcomm.com:/quest/unix/servers/popper

This is Qualcomm's (maker of Eudora) version of popper, "qpop". It is
a maintained package. Many people have reported success with it when the
vanilla "popper" package failed for their platform.
