I am planning to install FreeBSD and Solaris 2.4 on a generic
486/50 EISA. The machine currently has an UltraStor 24f which
is not supported by either BSD or Solaris.

I was thinking of getting an Adaptec 1742A as it seems to be the
only EISA card that is supported by both. Is it a good/ok card ?

The BusLogic bt747s/c isn't supported by Solaris? Dump Solaris. That
is the highest recommended EISA controller for the BSD systems. A
1742a will work if you need to use it.

Could someone also recommend a good (EISA) graphics adapter ?

The only EISA video card I know of is the ATI Ultra Pro EISA.

Also is the 3Com Etherlink III (3c579) supported ?

This works with the BSD's, yes.
