I wish I didn't have to add to the torrent of questions on modems, but
alas, I do.
I have read the FAQ and other bits I grabbed from the net, to no
avail. I am running FreeBSD 1.1.5.1 with a USR Sportster. I am using
the std.19200 (as well as the std.38400 entry) in gettytab for dialin
configuration. I have /etc/ttys set up correctly. I have /dev/ttyd1 and
/dev/cua01 set up. I can dial out with cua01 with Seyon with zero
problem.
Dialing *in* however is very odd. I can connect *sometimes*
flawlessly. Login prompt, excellent xfer rates, etc.
However, other times (and with different modems to do the dialing) I
get nothing but garbage chars upon connecting. Dialing in with
another USR connects me at 14.4 with all the LAPM, etc. goodies. When
dialing with a 9600 (V.32) I negotiate carrier fine, but get garbage on my
terminal. Same thing happens with a different modem when coming in at
2400. The garbage is different depending on which speed I come in at.
I have "stty </dev/ttyd1 crtscts" in my rc.serial file.
I have experimented with clocal settings, but am unsure on what the
*right* settings are for stty & my rc.serial file.
It seems as if I am suffering from a speed mismatch somewhere along
the line. My modem is configured to lock the port @ 19200 (or 38400,
see above) and it worked flawlessly with FreeBSD 1.1. Is there some
sort of setting I need to make in FreeBSD that I am missing? At first
I thought I had a parity problem, and have experimented with various
parities (np, ap, using even from the dialing client, etc.). No luck.
If anyone has any bright ideas, please pipe up! :-)
Lastly, can someone tell me what the sum total of net.info is out
there regarding modems on 1.1.5.1? I grabbed the FAQ from cdrom.com
but it is dated 6/28/94 or somesuch and had little modem info.
(mostly related to SLIP). If this is all that's out there on modems,
I am seriously considering making an offer to act as Grand Collector
of Modem Info for inclusion in the FAQ...
Thanks folks.
