My question is simple: should I continue troubleshooting, or is this
(ie the Cyrix 486DLC) a known, bad, chip for FreeBSD?

I don't know about Linux, but there is explicit support for the 486DLC
in NetBSD-1.0_Beta. Hopefully 1.0 will be out soon (or, if you're
*really* brave, you could try to install the unofficial test
installation disks someone built and threw on an ftp site).

If so, what about Linux? :-)

Who cares... ;-)
