I ported it to NetBSD_1.0_BETA. It had some dirty usage of 
ftruncate which caused a mess on my mfs-mounted /tmp. 
I had to add (off_t) to some of the arguments used in
ftruncate now and again.  I used the Makefiles meant for BSDI.
I think there was a declaration of strerror too somewhere
which I uncommented.

After that it stopped crashing and is now being used nicely
though not heavily since I prefer elm. The binaries will be
of no use to you since you want it for FreeBSD, but that
info should be enough for you and anybody else to get it to run.
