Daring to challenge the will of the almighty Leviam00se,
jeffrey d tesch (jdt@cs.pdx.edu) had the courage to say:

: Hi,

: I have just installed FreeBSD 1.1 and am trying to install XFree86 2.1.1.
: When I start the X server, it dies almost right away.

: Running:
: xinit >& xinit.err

: produced the following xinit.err file:
[some output deleted to save bandwitdth]

: (--) Trident chipset version: 0x33 (TVGA8900CL/D)
: (--) VGA256: chipset: tvga8900cl
: (--) VGA256: videoram: 1024k
[munch]
: (**) VGA256: Mode "1280x1024i": mode clock = 80.000, clock used = 80.000
: VGA256: Too little memory for mode 1280x1024i
  --------------------------------------------> Here's the problem

: *** A configured device found, but display modes could not be resolved.***

: Fatal server error:

: I don't know what it means.
: Please Help Me.

It seems pretty simple to me: you have a line in your Xconfig file for
1280x1024 resolution but you don't have enough memory on your video card
to support this resolution in 256 colors. Note that the videoram line
says that you have 1024K (1 meg) of video RAM. This is enough for
1024x768 with 256 colors, but not 1280x1024. You can do one of two
things:

1) Delete or comment out the 1280x1024i line in /usr/X386/lib/X11/Xconfig

2) Install more RAM on your card, if possible

Hope this helps.

: Thank you.
: Jeff Tesch
