Ho can I set my IP-adress during runtime?

Until now it was fixed in /etc/hosts but I have to use a different
IP-adress when I scwitch to one of the other lines.

I'm quiet confused about all the /etc-files anyway. Can someone tell
me what they are for and when they are read?

/etc/myname my hostname
/etc/hosts host,gateway,nameserver
/etc/host.conf ?
/etc/resolv.conf	nameserver
/etc/netstart ?

Did anyone manage to automate SLIP with dynamic IP-assignement?

Hope for any comments
