: It's 1:00A.M. and I'm at the end of my rope! ( sound familiar? ) I've
: been trying to setup a dialin line on FreeBSD 1.1.5.1 with no luck at
: all. I can dial out just fine with MiniCom on /dev/cua00 but this silly
: U.S. Robotics 14.4 Sportster won't auto-answer. Seems that it can't
: store S0=001 in VRAM ( the manual says that it's designed this way! ), so
: after a reset or on boot-up it reverts to S0=000. I tried echoing
: ATS0=001 to all of the 1st serial port device lines and the best that I
: get is a lock-up. I set these devices to RW for all and it made no
: difference. Maybe I've overlooked something. If anyone has any ideas
: ( useful ones ) I would greatly appreciate hearing them.

Try this:

Go into minicom or wherever you can get your modem working. Send an
"ATS0=1&W" to your modem. What the "&W" part does, is save your
auto-answer string in the modem's non-volatile RAM, so whenever you issue
an ATZ, auto-answer should stay on.
