Hm, this isn't true. I have a Tandberg Streamer (quarter inch) at home. The sun
writes fixed records with a record length of 512 bytes on it. FreeBSD let
the streamer decide what to do. My streamer writes it with variable
block size. By the way, both can read the other format...

Try a st -f /dev/"device" blocksize 0. works for me on FreeBSD.
