NOT!  the fix to if_we.c is at the end of this post.

running gated is a good idea but irelevant to the problem at hand.

OK, OK...

This patch is quite trivial but I don't understand why the error was
made in the first place.  I intended to test this further before
posting it but if others have the same problem...
