I don't believe I've seen this on an adaptec, but I do get it on
a BusLogic 742A (?)  It is a "Storage Dimensions" OEM model, but
the kernel does recognize it as bt0, except I get an error very
similar to the above.

Is that a Micropolis 2217S?  That's exactly what I was hooking up!
I have it jumpered to SCSI2, parity enabled.  I also have parity enabled
on the SCSI controller.  I haven't fiddled with it because my 1542B
works fine!  Check your termination.. :-)
