According to a recent posting there is a flaw in the SMC
chipsets emulation of the 16550A. I am unable to use the
patch supplied as it relates to version 1.5.1.1 of FreeBSD
and at present I am unable to change over from 1.1R.

If possible I would appreciate help with the following:

* the nature of the fault in the SMC chipset.
* a working patch to 1.1R to allow the serial ports to function.

Thank you for your assistance
