It seems that xdm is not configured to use libdes although passwd and
other related programs do. There are two versions of xdm (xdm-des and
xdm-nodes as distributed binaries), because exporting DES to outside USA
is forbidden and so xdm may be configured to use no libdes by default.
Change your Makefile and compile xdm again.
