	This might be a spurious answer, but I seem to vaguely remember
this from early 386bsd 0.1 days.  I kind of think it was something
stupid like root being in more than 8 groups.  Try doing a "groups root"
and if there are more than eight showing this might be it.  If not
then I don't know.
