It's not worse than in other commercial systems ;-) 
A nice example for that... Last week I had the same trouble with 
SCO's last commericial Unix (ODT 3.0 Enterprise server system) and a 
Novell 3.12 box running Netware NFS.
When you try to mount a Novell partition the NFS mount immediately
*ucks up when making a backup. A normal ls -li instead works.

Next week I'll try a NFS mount from FreeBSD 1.1.5.1 to a Sun
running SunOS 4.1.3_U1 (1.1.1 Rev B). If you like I can tell you
my experiences. In my system I have a 8013 card (SMC elite 16Bit
ISA).
