I'll reply to my own post, in case anyone else has the same problem...

Silly Me!  I guess my /dev/esp wasn't working!  Why, oh why don't the folks
at ATI bother to put into their manual that the mouse in a Graphics Ultra Pro
ISA card is _Logitech_ compatible and NOT _Microsoft_ compatible?  Of course,
when I use the /dev/lms0 device, everything suddenly starts working!

	Now happily using XFree86 on NetBSD,
